When the motor and/or brakes are set on an offshore umbilical reel and the drilling riser is lowered, resulting high umbilical tension can damage the cable, support sheaves, the reel, and/or injure personnel.
A constant torque setting on a reel causes a tension variation of as much as 3 to 1 due to the change in the spooling radius as the umbilical is deployed. With Constant Tension Slip Control the CT-2 Reels can monitor the amount of umbilical on the reel, calculate the spooling radius and adjust the slip clutches to slip at a constant umbilical tension.
The CT-2 also automatically controls the air pressure driving the motor. This additional constant tension control lets the motor tension be operated within 25% of the slip tension at all times, rather than at a 3/1 minimum difference. Additionally an instrumented locking pin which functions as a strain gauge load pin to allow field personnel to easily calibrate the motor control pressures and the slip loadings can be added, giving a greater level of assurance after equipment has been in offshore service for years.
The CT-2 Tension system is designed so that all current Radoil reels in the field with slip clutches can be retrofitted with this new system.
