· Allow pipe to be raised from horizontal into alignment with the centerline of the J-Lay Tower, irrespective of the gimbaled angle of the J-Lay Tower

· Ability to closely align the ends of pipe sections to be welded together

· Ability to rotate the supporting vessel around the pipeline being supported, irrespective of the angle of the pipeline
